(Updated 9/13/2011)

The purpose of the EPFSC point system is to determine skaters eligible for a solo or small group in the spring ice show each year. It is designed to encourage skaters to:

  • Maintain Eden Prairie as their home club,
  • Contract for EPFSC ice,
  • Participate in USFS judged competitions, (and)
  • Continue to progress through the test levels.

The Ice Show Point System Policy is reviewed annually, is based on TCFSA policies and is consistent with many other clubs.

Clarification of Points Accumulated

All points accumulated will be counted toward solos and small groups. A skater's total points will include the sum of their competition points, testing points and seniority points during he calendar year preceding the show (Jan 1- Dec 31). In most years, the testing points' deadline will be the last EPFSC testing date scheduled for our club members (even though this may be earlier than Dec 31).

Solos will be awarded to the 7 skaters with the highest point accumulation. Small group numbers will be assigned at the discretion of the ice show director either by test level or by point accumulation level derived from competitions, testing and seniority. Skaters will be considered for small group numbers or solos once they have passed their Juvenile freestyle test.

Automatic soloists (as defined later in this policy for regional and state competitors and senior freestylists) will be in addition to the top 7 solos awarded based on point accumulation IF they are not already included in the top 7. If they ARE in the top 7 point earners, then there will be 7 soloists that year.

All skaters considered for a solo or a small group are subject to Eligibility and Contracting amount Rules.

Eligibility Rules

  • A skater must be a HOME CLUB MEMBER of EPFSC at least by the FALL CONTRACT of the year preceding the show.
  • A skater must be contracting for the WINTER CONTRACT preceding the show and must skate a minimum of 3 sessions per week during this contract.
  • The skater must be a member in good standing.

Contracting Rules

A skater must contract a MINIMUM of $1850 of club ice in total for the 4 ice contracts ending with the fall contract preceding the show. In other words for the 2007 show, this amount would be accumulated for the Winter 05/06 contract, Spring 06 contract, Summer 06 contract and the Fall 06 Contract. NOTE: Developmental ice, rink monitor credits, fundraising and rink monitor buyouts are NOT included in the contracting dollars.

This amount includes (in order to be eligible for a solo or small group

  • EPFSC contracted ice sessions, during the contracts indicated above,
  • Exhibition fees for the contract periods above,
  • Off-ice classes or seminars sponsored by the EPFSC, taken during the contract period above,
  • Buy-ins on contracted ice (For example, for the 2007 show - EPFSC buy-ins for Fall 2005, Winter 05/06, Spring 06 and Summer 06 are including because buy-ins are generally included on billing statements one contract in arrears).
  • The previous year's annual ice show fee, if the skater was a participant.

On-ice sessions must be skated on EPFSC contracted ice – not on other clubs' ice.

Seniority Points

  • Skaters will accumulate 1 point for each two-month period they are a continuous HOME CLUB MEMBER of the EPFSC.
  • Skaters will receive 1 point on the following dates each year: January 1, March 1, May 1, July 1, September 1, and November 1. (For example, if a skater joined the club in May or June, the first point would be accumulated on July 1st of that year).
  • These points are retained year after year.

Competition Points

Skaters are encouraged to obtain competition ordinal sheets for proof of placement beginning for all Pre-Juvenile and above events. Skaters must have passed their Juvenile freestyle test to submit ordinal sheets, but pre-juvenile events competed prior to passing the juvenile test can be submitted.

A maximum of three Pre-Juvenile and above events from any competition in which the skater represented the EPFSC as their home club will be counted toward point accumulations for solos or small groups.  The events can be from the same competition or different competitions. Points will be calculated based on actual placement, not factored placement. Ordinals allowed for submission will be determined based the following categories:

Category 1 - Short and long programs (including pairs events).

These events require music, choreography and the top skill elements a skater can offer. These are the "high bar" events for the sport of figure skating and need to have the greatest points recognition in determining soloists for our annual ice show. Up to three ordinals may be submitted from this category.

Category 2 -Test track freestyle programs.

These events include much of the difficulty of a long or short program: jumps, spins, footwork, choreography, artistry and endurance. For a skater to compete in a test track event – particularly at the upper test levels – a skater must be committed to this sport with a full practice schedule. Up to two ordinals may be submitted from this category.

Category 3 - All other competition events

Other events, even if not specifically listed here: jumps, spins, compulsory, artistic, moves in the field, basic skills. One ordinal may be submitted from this category.

  • NOTE: If a skater turns in two test track event ordinals, they may NOT also turn in a Category 3 ordinal. i.e., any third ordinal submitted may ONLY be from a Category 1 event.
  • If an event includes combined skating levels (e.g., juvenile and intermediate artistic), the ordinal will be factored for points accumulation using the primary level at which the skater registered for the competition, or the freestyle test level of the skater at the time of the competition registration, whichever is higher.
  • Points will be awarded based on placement ahead of the 6th skater. In the event that there are fewer than 6 skaters in a group, placement will be ahead of the last skater in the group. (SEE EXAMPLES BELOW:)

EXAMPLE FOR PLACEMENT WITH 6 SKATERS:

1st place receives:5 points

2nd place receives:4 points

3rd place receives:3 points

4th place receives:2 points

5th place receives:1 point

EXAMPLE FOR PLACEMENT WITH 5 SKATERS:

1st place receives:4 points

2nd place receives:3 points

3rd place receives:2 points

4th place receives:1 point

(NOTE: Groups with 4, 3, AND 2 SKATERS will be compiled in the same manner, with no points awarded to the last place finisher).

Point values received will then be multiplied by the "weight" assigned based on the level of the competition entered according to the following example:

Pre-Juvenile/Open Pre-Juvenile - 1

Juvenile/Open Juvenile - 2

Intermediate - 3

Novice - 4

Junior - 5

Senior - 6

[EXAMPLE: Jane entered the freeskating event at the Intermediate level and

Placed 3rd. The total points accumulated for this competition are: 9 (3 x 3).]

Pairs Addendum – Approved June 2008

The purpose of this addendum is to include specific consideration in our show point system for pairs skaters.

All policies as set forth in the primary "Policy E – Ice Show System" (above) apply to pairs skaters, except as indicated or emphasized below:

  • A pairs skater's points will be considered individually for qualification for ice show small groups and solos. This could mean that one partner in a pairs team qualifies for a small group or a solo and the other not.
  • For a pairs "team" to be considered for a pairs number in the ice show, both skaters must meet eligibility and contracting requirements and earn adequate points for consideration. It is the discretion of the ice show director if pairs skaters earn a spot in a small group, or a solo or a pairs performance.
  • Each individual must meet eligibility and contracting requirements as set forth in the policy, including the $1850 annual EPFSC ice purchase.
  • Each individual skater will accumulate seniority points based on their home club member date with EPFSC.
  • Pairs skaters must pass either their juvenile pairs test or their juvenile freestyle test to qualify for points consideration.
  • At this time there is no pre-juvenile pairs test, so competition points will be earned beginning with juvenile pairs events. Should pre-juvenile pairs events become a standard in competition, then points may be earned beginning with pre-juvenile pairs events. A skater may, however, still earn pre-juvenile points though basic skill competitions or compulsory events as outlined in the original policy.
  • Pairs competition points earned will be awarded based on the same criteria as the original policy. Example, a pairs team takes 3rd place in a group of 4 pairs at the juvenile competitive level. This would earn each member of the pairs team 2 total competition points for that event. Weighting for skating level will also be the same as set forth in the original policy.
  • Testing points for pairs is included in the original policy.

Policy Addendum Approved February 7, 2012

Additional soloists will be awarded if a skater meets all eligibility and contracting requirements; in addition, the skater must meet ALL of the following requirements:

  • the skater is a graduating senior
  • the skater has passed the Novice Freeskating Test
  • the skater has been an EPFSC Home club member for at least 5 years
  • and the skater is within 5 percent of the 7th qualifying soloist's total points
